The field of quantum computing strives to exploit some of the uncanny aspects of quantum mechanics for computing. This book for intermediate to advanced students of computer science stresses the computer science aspect of quantum computing. Beginning chapters cover mathematical preliminaries (complex numbers and complex vector spaces), and present the basic architecture of quantum computing. Fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics are introduced using simple models and simple matrix multiplication. Later chapters look at subfields of quantum computing, such as algorithms, programming languages, theoretical computer science, information theory, and hardware. Step-by-step examples, programming drills, and about 200 exercises with solutions are included. One appendix takes readers on a tour of major papers in quantum computing. Another appendix uses MATLAB to show how to carry out most of the mathematical operations described in th. There is also a list of online resources, and a list of possible topics for student presentations. Th is accessible to students in the second year (or beyond) of a computer science program who have finished a first course in discrete structures. The calculus-phobic reader will be happy to find that derivatives and integrals are absent from the text, and that knowledge of classical mechanics is not assumed. Th avoids differentiation, integration, and all higher mathematics by selecting only those topics that are critical to a basic introduction to quantum computing. Yanofsky teaches computer and information science at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. Mannucci is founder of a research and development company with a focus on innovative mathematical modeling. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR ()
