The book is a recent contribution to the debate on postcolonial perspectives in art science. In the center stands the DAK'ART Biennale, which reveals a common identity-political dilemma: artists from the African continent often not only have to be "contemporary" but also "African" in order to be recognized in the international, but more Western-dominated art scene to obtain. From a post-colonial and gender-theoretical perspective, the author argues that this problematic is to be seen in the context of the traditional discourse on primitivism. In a differentiated exhibition analysis she asks about critical artistic and curatorial strategies of the DAK'ART 2006 and develops proposals for contemporary curatorial approaches.
