Johnson (applied mathematics, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden) published the Swedish version of his first book on the finite element method in 1980, and the English version first appeared in 1984. It covers the basics of elliptic and parabolic problems, and introduces the new theme of hyperbolic problems. Over the intervening decades, the method has been generalized to solve most any partial differential equation, and he and co-workers have developed a reformed mathematics education approach, to which this volume still serves as a suitable introduction.
