    • Modernizing Medicine in Zimbabwe : HIV/AIDS and Traditional Healers, Hardcover by Simmons, David S., ISBN 0826518079, ISBN-13 9780826518071, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US

Simmons (anthropology, U. of South Carolina) explores how modern biomedical narratives of health and healing are repressing or altogether erasing alternative ways of knowing the world in Zimbabwe. Th is divided into three parts with one or two or chapters apiece. He starts by examining the social demography of AIDS and attempts to make sense of the disease in terms of social engineering and control. The second section looks at the historical constitution of Zimbabwe natives (n'anga) by missionaries as inherently immoral and diseased beings. The last section looks at local explanations for the AIDS epidemic and shows an awareness of structural violence in the patterns of infection. One of Simmons arguments is that the n'anga and traditional healers in general are unfairly judged as relying on supernatural mechanisms for explaining health and illness that allow allopathic doctors to dismiss their perspectives out of hand.
