In 1961, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce issued a three volume report on the presidential campaign of 1960, an exhaustive compilation of transcripts of interviews, speeches, and joint appearances by the presidential candidates, Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon, as well as those of their vice presidential running mates, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. The volumes were published by the U.S. Government Printing Office in paperback, but these three volumes were hardbound and stamped in gold on the front cover with the name of the owner, John L. Graves, a Democratic congressional staff member.
Volume 1 is 1440 pages of “The Speeches, Remarks, Press Conferences, and Statements of Senator John F. Kennedy, August 1 Through November 7, 1960”. Volume 2 is 1366 pages of the same of Vice President Nixon. Volume 3 is 699 pages of “The Joint Appearances” of the two and “Other 1960 Campaign Presentations”. The “Joint Appearances” is how the Committee referred to the historic televised Kennedy-Nixon debates and the debates are fully transcribed.
All three volumes are in very good, clean condition with minimal color fading on the spines. Volume 1 shows no yellowing of the pages, but Volumes 2&3 each have sections that have yellowed. Volume 3 also has a water stain at the top edge of the pages, which seeped slightly down into the pages, as is visible in the photos.
These three volumes are an invaluable reference for anyone who studies the politics of the 1960s and two iconic candidates who dominated the era. It is particularly unusual to find them hardbound.
