The bulk of the text focuses on the earlier periods of Sudanese history including the nineteenth century Turco-Egyptian period and the Anglo-Egyptian era, the development of Sudanese nationalism in the first half of the twentieth century and the independence era. The work includes several maps and a selected bibliography of further readings on the subject.
