- A stunning vintage Ethiopian beaded necklace with amulet pendant, 20th century. Amulet features filigree border and cone and ball dangle charms, strand is beaded with alternating ball and phallic fertility beads. Large square amulets like this were considered protective prayer boxes and sealed shut with wishes for prosperity, happiness, and health! Necklace measures approx. 27"l, amulet approx. 1.5"h x 1.75"l, 3.5"h including dangles. Weighs overall approx. 131g (4.6oz). In vintage condition, displaying general surface wear and tarnish, as well as imperfections to the beads and hand-formed elements consistent with use - see pictures. Unmarked, amulet and some beads acid test positive for silver, other components appear to just be white metal. An extraodinary piece of east African craftsmanship!.
