DAVID GATES
“FIRST”
WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! MEGARARE and Hard-To-Find original Elektra Records very first STEREO press released in 1975 in Chile by Asociación Fonográfica Nacional “ASFONA” M.R. (ASFONA Records), licensed from Atlantic Records, USA, with green/black Elektra Records labels, catalog number EKS 75066, with hand etched matrix numbers EKS-75066-A EB-CD in Side A and EKS-75066-B EB-CD in Side B. It’s interesting to notice that in the deadwax of both sides is written the exact day of pressing, “28-10-75” (October 28th of 1975). Yes, Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from Chile!!!
“FIRST” is the debut solo album by David Gates, leader of Bread, originally released in 1973, and it seems we had to wait a long time to see this great album released in Chile, because it was only released in 1975 here but like so many times of the period we got it with an UNIQUE COVER!!! The non-gatefold cover is a flipback cover made of 2 single pieces of thin non laminated cardboard with front cover pasted on the flips of back cover. Front cover keeps strictly the original artwork with album title written in English only, the only differences are the blue colour and darker photo of David Gates, and the ASFONA Records logo at top right corner. Back cover also keeps the original design with all text written in English, but as you can see here in Chile and only in Chile it’s blue tinted!!! It’s interesting to see that in back cover the sides are identified as “Side One” and “Side Two” but in labels they are only “A” and “B”. In back cover it’s also informed this Chilean press is part of the serie “Serie Especial De Lujo” (Deluxe Special serie) of ASFONA Records and it also has the “El Disco Es Cultura” (Record Is Culture) logo at bottom left corner. In labels the album title and tracklist are written in English only, with full credits for David Gates as songwriter, arranger and producer. As you can see only here in Chile you can find this album with green Elektra Records labels!!! So, one more time another classic rock album edited in Chile with UNIQUE COVER and UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS!!! Yes Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from this side of the world!!!
The cover was already described and it’s in great VG- or VG condition both sides, clean and complete, but with evident wear in all edges and corners, many creases and bends, some little rips, but no seam splits, which’s almost a miracle with this kind of so fragile covers, some blemishes in back cover, a very light ring mark and a black painting at top right corner in front cover and a name written at top right corner in back cover. The record is in great VG- or VG condition both sides, glossy and clean, but with many scuffs, light hairlines and soft scratches, which don’t affect play. Labels on both sides are in great EX- or EX condition, absolutely clean and clear, no marks, some moderate spindle hole wear and the name of some past owner in Side B. The sound is the best part, it’s in strong VG or VG+ condition both sides, loud, clear and clean, with a soft background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), light crackles and some hiss, occasional soft pops and clicks here and there, more evident in silent parts, which of course don’t cause major distraction from the great sound this record keeps from the beginning to the end. Overall, a nice record, not for strict audiophiles or Minty minds, but with a cover still in great condition and a record with still a nice glossy look and very decent and respectable sound quality after about 50 years, which shouldn’t disappoint anyone and should satisfy any serious collector who knows the real level of rarity of this Chilean press!!! WOW!!! “First” by David Gates with UNIQUE COVER, with date of pressing in the deadwax, UNIQUE BLUE TINTED BACK COVER and UNIQUE GREEN ELEKTRA LABELS!!! WOW!!! Click on the pictures to enlarge and see the cover and labels in detail.

_________________________________________________________
We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.
MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.
NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new
condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some
very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The
cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in
like perfect condition.
EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is
very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t
affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays
no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and
the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items,
without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has
noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The
cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits,
discoloration, etc.
FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly
and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface
noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

FEEDBACK
We don’t have anything to hide and we know the buyers expect to receive feedback after to pay for the items they win. Most of sellers say to give feedback when buyers leave feedback first. But we know that’s not fair for buyers. So, we leave feedback immediately after to receive the payment, because we understand that’s the part that buyers must receive feedback for. And we expect to receive positive feedback from buyers who receive the records immediately after they have got the records.
IMPORTANT TO READ
IMPORTANT UPDATE (September 2024)
Because the
UK’s tax authority, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), requires eBay collect
VAT information from sellers with UK customers, I’ve been informed that I need
to have a “valid UK VAT number on file” to sell to UK customers. As I live in
Chile and all my items are shipped from Chile, I don’t have an “UK VAT number”,
so I’m sorry to inform that I’M FORCED TO EXCLUDE
THE UK FROM MY WORLDWIDE SHIPPING POLICY. If you live in the UK and
you’d like to bid/buy some of my records, please contact me, I’m sure we could
find some solution.
If you have some doubt or question, feel free to contact us, we will be glad to answer all that you want to know about this item.
