This book grew out of a 2008 conference on cultural voices in contemporary Iraq at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the Philipps-Universitat, Marburgh, DE. The contributors are a mix of poets, journalists, translators, writers, and scholars. The majority are displaced persons recently from Iraq, some still living in the Middle East and some now living in Europe. European, Iraqi-Israeli, and Iraqi-European contributors are also represented. All the pieces in th deal with Iraqi writing and culture during and after Baathist rule. The collection speaks to experiences of fragmentation and trauma, and its contents effectively mirror the situation: a few scholarly-academic essays share space with transcriptions of oral interviews, poems, less formal accounts of culture-making, and recollections written in the lyric language of memoir. The pieces intergrade from scholarship about literature and culture to pieces of literature and culture, with a great deal of territory left purposely in between. All essays are in English. Many original short pieces, mostly poems, are included in Roman transliterations of Arabic or Arabic script, always with skilled English translation. The collection will be of interest to scholars of recent events and contemporary literature and culture in Iraq, but also to general readers seeking a picture of contemporary Iraq from Iraqi perspectives, focused on memory, loss, art, and human experience.
